I first worked on my entrance. I added a half moon table that I bought at TJ Maxx for cheap which I promptly brought home and distressed using white primer and black glaze over top.
Every room in your home should have a purpose...Even if you don't use every room (I sure wasn't) when you show your home you should really think along these lines: purpose, purpose, purpose...So I de-cluttered an entrance I had never once used, painted the walls a neutral gray with white trim, painted the doors (Um, I am SO guilty of never doing this until right before I sold - shame on me!! They were still in gray primer the way they came), added the table, etc.
I envisioned using the entrance. Walking inside with hands full of mail, groceries, kids, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, partner, dog, having a spot to set your keys down, having some kind of a message/communication item.
I made my own chalkboard paint using 1 cup of latex paint to 3 heaping tablespoons of unsanded grout and mixed well. I wanted to create a faux mirror, so I set about choosing what type of mirror frame, taped the area off, and set to work. I did about 2 coats of the chalkboard paint. My tip would be to peel the painter's tape off while the paint is still wet and then go at your areas that you missed or smudged by hand with a small art paintbrush. I free handed the top.
I replaced the light fixture with something that wasn't brass. My choices were limited because I needed one that had the actual on/off switch on the fixture. If I were staying I would eventually get something different, but anything is better than fake plated brass!
